About BRT

What is Bus Rapid Transit?

Bus Rapid Transit, or BRT, is a high-quality, bus-based travel option that combines the fast and efficient characteristics of rail transit with the flexibility of traditional bus service. BRT will bring a faster-than-ever public transportation option to Metro riders.

BRT uses frequent service, limited stops, smart traffic signals, dedicated bus lanes (where possible), and streamlined boarding and exiting processes to significantly reduce travel times and provide riders with convenient and reliable service.

Why is BRT coming to Cincinnati and Hamilton County?

With the passage of Issue 7 in the spring of 2020, Hamilton County voters approved a sales tax levy of 0.8 percent and a new funding source for Metro. With improved funding, Metro is keeping our promise by bringing to life its Reinventing Metro plan, offering the Greater Cincinnati region bold, new transit innovations that will help grow the regional economy and better connect our community to jobs, education, health care and entertainment. Bringing BRT to the community is just one of the ways Reinventing Metro is keeping our promises.

BRT will elevate our local public transportation system to the next level. Through streamlined access and travel, BRT will help passengers like you get to jobs and other destinations more quickly, comfortably, and reliably. And, by reducing greenhouse gas and local air pollutant emissions, BRT offers an environmentally sustainable alternative for local travel.

Why is BRT good for the communities it serves?

BRT is a high-quality, bus-based travel option that combines the speed, efficiency, and comfort of rail transit with the flexibility of traditional bus service. It’s a bold, new transit innovation for our region that will bring faster-than-ever service and significantly reduced travel times for riders. BRT systems can also encourage economic growth and community enhancements along its corridors and around BRT stations.
